The Association

The Ignatian Way is a project rooted in the work of the Society of Jesus, the organization that in 2011 designed this 410-mile route tracing the footsteps of Ignatius of Loyola on his 1522 journey from Azpeitia to Manresa. This historical legacy is the foundation for a project that aims to energize the regions through tourism, while respecting the identity and original meaning of the route.

To lead this tourism focused side of the project, the Association of Municipalities of the Ignatian Way (AMCI) was created in January 2025. This organization brings together the shared commitment of the 92 towns in five autonomous communities (Basque Country, Navarre, La Rioja, Aragon and Catalonia) that make up the route. AMCI is responsible for providing a unified vision for tourism, working to ensure that the Way becomes an inland destination that is sustainable, accessible and cohesive, highlighting the cultural, culinary and natural assets, as well as the festivals and traditions of each town along the route.

This project has the strategic support of the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism through agreements to develop tourism on the route. Additionally, regional governments, provincial councils and the Society of Jesus are actively involved in this management model.
